HCMC – Vietnam plans to start work on the North-South high-speed railway by late 2027, with the Ministry of Transport moving forward on investment approvals, contractor selection, land clearance, and material preparation.

The ministry, in coordination with relevant agencies and local authorities, will begin key tasks in 2025. These include selecting consulting contractors for surveys, preparing a feasibility study report, and completing related groundwork.

The feasibility study is expected to be submitted to the prime minister in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The Appraisal Council will evaluate the study and submit it for approval by the end of the first quarter of 2027. Once approved, the Ministry of Transport will proceed with contractor selection, contract signings, and other preparations to ensure construction begins in the fourth quarter of 2027.

The North-South high-speed railway will feature a dual-track system with a 1,435mm gauge, designed for speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour.

Spanning  1,541 kilometers, it will connect Ngoc Hoi Station in Hanoi to Thu Thiem Station in HCMC, passing through 20 provinces and centrally governed cities.

The project will be publicly funded, with feasibility studies starting in 2025 and targeted for substantial completion by 2035.
