HCMC – The National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) is expediting the construction of the Vinh Yen 500kV transmission line project to meet rising electricity demand during the 2025 dry season.

Managed by the Northern Power Projects Management Board, the project is classified as a special energy facility. It will feature two 900MVA transformers, each comprising three 300MVA single-phase units, with provisions for a future third 500kV transformer.

The substation will connect to the 500kV Hiep Hoa–Son La transmission line, creating a crucial link between thermal and hydroelectric power plants. It will also tie into the under-construction 500kV Lao Cai–Vinh Yen line, facilitating power transfers from small hydroelectric plants in the northwest and imported electricity sources.

Despite construction commencing in late 2022, land clearance delays pushed the project timeline back. As of October 2023, 90% of the civil works have been completed.

Electricity Licogi 16 JSC, the main contractor, has pledged to ramp up manpower and expedite equipment installation to meet the March 2025 deadline. However, EVNNPT cautioned that delays in transporting imported transformer equipment could pose challenges.

Once operational, the project will enhance the electricity supply for Vinh Phuc Province and nearby regions, ensuring stability during peak summer demand in 2025 and supporting Vietnam’s increasing reliance on imported power.
