HCMC – The Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam has approved the revival of the Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power project, signaling the resumption of the country’s nuclear energy development program after a seven-year hiatus.

The decision, announced at a plenum of the Party Central Committee in Hanoi on November 25, underscores the importance of nuclear energy in ensuring national energy security and supporting Vietnam’s economic growth. Party General Secretary To Lam highlighted the project’s critical role in meeting the rising demand for electricity.

The Politburo has been tasked with formulating a comprehensive roadmap for nuclear energy development. The Ninh Thuan project will undergo a thorough re-evaluation, with results submitted to relevant authorities for further consideration.

Suspended in 2016 due to concerns over high costs and safety issues, the project is being revived to address Vietnam’s rapidly growing electricity demand, which is expected to increase by 12-13% annually.

The Party Central Committee emphasized that the highest standards of safety and environmental protection must guide the development of nuclear energy infrastructure. Urgent measures to modernize Vietnam’s energy sector were also called for to ensure the country’s long-term energy sustainability.
