HCMC — Vietnam and the U.S. made progress in their second round of negotiations on a reciprocal trade agreement, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said today, May 22.

Talks took place in Washington, D.C. from May 19 to 22, with the Vietnamese side led by Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien. The Vietnamese delegation included representatives from multiple ministries and the State Bank of Vietnam.

On the final day, Minister Dien met with U.S. Ambassador and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to review the outcomes and outline priorities for upcoming negotiations in early June.

Greer acknowledged Vietnam’s efforts to address U.S. concerns and called for continued engagement at both technical and ministerial levels. Dien reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to advancing a balanced and sustainable trade relationship.

During the three-day talks, both sides discussed all agenda items raised in earlier rounds. Negotiators exchanged information on domestic policies, clarified draft agreement, and discussed approaches to address key issues of mutual concern.

The two delegations identified areas of broad agreement and topics requiring further discussion. They also set timelines for feedback on the draft and planned additional meetings ahead of the next round of talks.
