HCMC – The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has released a list of 173 transboundary and 516 inter-provincial surface water sources, along with 34 major lakes across Vietnam.

The list is provided in the ministry’s Decision No. 1004/QD-BNNMT, which serves as the legal backbone for water resource planning, establishment of protection corridors and management of cross-border water cooperation.

The updated directory provides a synchronized database of river codes, flow lengths and precise coordinates, ensuring more effective water governance amidst climate change and surging exploitation demands.

A highlight of the new list is the detailed mapping of 34 key lakes, categorized by their functions such as hydropower, irrigation or multi-purpose usage. The ministry has updated rigorous data on total and active storage capacities, specifically noting massive reservoirs with over nine billion cubic meters, such as the Hoa Binh and Son La hydropower reservoirs.

Other vital water bodies like the Dau Tieng (irrigation) and Cua Dat (multi-purpose) reservoirs, stretching across multiple localities like Tay Ninh, HCMC and Thanh Hoa, are also strictly cataloged to ensure integrated management across regional boundaries.
