HCMC – Vietnamese consumers lost an estimated VND18.9 trillion to online scams in 2024, according to a cybersecurity report released today, December 16, by the National Cybersecurity Association.
The report, based on a survey of over 59,000 online users conducted between November 28 and December 14, said that 0.45% of respondents—equivalent to one in 220 users—fell victim to online fraud.
Scammers employed various tactics, including fake investment schemes, impersonation of organizations, and false prize notifications. They leveraged advanced technologies like AI-generated deepfake videos and automated chatbots to deceive unsuspecting victims.
Despite the prevalence of scams, only 45.69% of victims reported incidents to authorities, while 88.98% chose to inform friends and family instead. Experts noted that the low reporting rate hampers efforts to combat online fraud effectively.
The report also cautioned that emerging technologies such as AI and blockchain could enable even more sophisticated scams in 2025. It urged users to adopt stronger cybersecurity measures and remain vigilant when sharing personal information online.
