HCMC – Key state leadership positions for the 2026-2031 tenure, including the state president, prime minister and chair of the National Assembly, will be elected at the first sitting of the 16th National Assembly (NA), scheduled for April 6 to 23.
Nguyen Van Hien, deputy head of the National Assembly Office, gave the information at an April 3 press briefing on the agenda of the sitting.
The session will open on the morning of April 6 and is expected to close on April 23, with a total of 11 working days. It will be held in two phases, with one lasting from April 6 to 12 and the other from April 20 to 23, with April 24 and 25 reserved as contingency days.
Specifically, the NA will elect the chairperson and vice chairpersons of the legislature, members of its Standing Committee, the president and vice president of state, the prime minister, the chief justice of the Supreme People’s Court, the prosecutor general of the Supreme People’s Procuracy, and the state auditor general.
It will also approve appointments to key government posts, including deputy prime ministers, ministers and other members, along with several other positions within its authority.
In total, around 39 positions are expected to be elected or approved by the National Assembly at the sitting, covering the full range of senior leadership roles at the central level and enabling a comprehensive reshuffle of state institutions for the new term.
The National Assembly will also review and decide on organisational and personnel matters, consider eight draft laws and one resolution, and discuss five groups of issues covering socio economic affairs, finance, the state budget, oversight and other key matters.
In addition, nine groups of reports will be submitted by relevant agencies for lawmakers’ consideration.
