HCMC – Vietnam’s telecom giant Viettel Group launched the country’s first commercial 5G service today, October 15, promising faster internet speed and ultra-low latency, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
The new 5G network offers significantly faster Internet connection than 4G, with theoretical speed reaching up to 10Gbps. In practical use, typical 5G speeds can hit 1Gbps, which is about 10 times faster than 4G.
Viettel is offering 11 prepaid packages, starting from VND135,000, and eight postpaid options, with monthly fees reaching up to VND2 million.
Meanwhile, VinaPhone has begun offering free 5G service in the areas covered by its network. A VinaPhone representative said that by the end of 2024, the company plans to complete the installation of over 3,000 5G base transceiver stations, primarily in urban areas and major economic hubs across Vietnam.
Keeping pace with competitors, MobiFone has adopted an infrastructure-sharing model with telecom operators using compatible 5G frequency bands. Earlier this month, MobiFone signed a memorandum of understanding with Ericsson to collaborate on innovation and advance 5G development in the country.
