HCMC – VinSpeed, a subsidiary of the private conglomerate Vingroup, plans to start work on a high-speed urban railway linking former District 7 and the coastal area of Can Gio in November this year.

At a seminar on August 22, a VinSpeed representative said the company had proposed a high-speed rail line to Can Gio, with a total length of 48.1 kilometers and a design speed of up to 350 kilometers per hour.

The journey is expected to take about 16 minutes, with a service frequency of one trip every 12 minutes during the 2030-2050 period, Le Van Khoa, technical director of VinSpeed, said.

The project includes two main stations: Tan Thuan Station, located on Nguyen Van Linh Street, and Can Gio Station, which is planned to be built on a 39-hectare site. Each train will have eight carriages, with a capacity of 600 to 800 passengers.

In addition to the railway line, the Can Gio railway bridge is also under study, separate from the Can Gio road bridge currently being planned.

The cable-stayed bridge is designed with a main span of 350 meters and a vertical clearance of 242 meters. Its main girder will be a steel truss, meeting railway technical standards while ensuring clearance for vessels navigating the Soai Rap River.

VinSpeed will serve as the sole investor of the project, pledging to finance it entirely with privately mobilized capital rather than state funds.

The project’s total preliminary investment is estimated at VND76.12 trillion (US$2.93 billion), with nearly US$287.7 million allocated for site clearance. The payback period is expected to be 18 years, with a cost-revenue ratio of 1.451.

According to the plan, land clearance and compensation will begin in the fourth quarter of 2025, with construction starting in November 2025. The project will be built and installed between 2025 and 2027, undergo trial runs by the end of 2027, and enter commercial operation in early 2028.
