VN-Index rises past 900 points

HCMC – Strong gains of bank stocks, coupled with increased demand for many bluechips, sent the VN-Index of the Hochiminh Stock Exchange up to 900.95 points today, September 18.

Closing the day, the main index jumped by 6.91 points, or 0.77%, against the session earlier, with winners outnumbering losers by 245 to 148. There were 361.8 million shares worth VND6.7 trillion changing hands, down 8.5% in volume and 1.8% in value from the previous session. Block deals contributed VND1.5 trillion to the total value.

Among bank stocks, BID expanded 1.2% to hit its intraday high of VND41,000 per share while other lenders such as CTG, MBB, TCB and TPB rose by 2%-3.6%, becoming key contributors to the gain of the main index.

Banking stocks also traded actively on the southern bourse, with MBB and STB seeing over 11.7 million shares and 8.7 million shares change hands, respectively.

Other stocks in the VN30 basket such as tech firm FPT, gas firm GAS, and dairy stock VNM were in positive territory.

Many speculative stocks continued their upward spiral, with industrial zone developer ITA leading the southern bourse by liquidity. Some 14.2 million ITA shares changed hands at the close.

On the Hanoi Stock Exchange, the HNX-Index extended its rally, ending up 0.73 points, or 0.57%, from the session earlier, at 129.2.

Many stocks in the HNX30 basket gained ground, with lenders NVB and ACB advancing 2.3% and 0.9%, respectively. Bank stock SHB, oil and gas enterprise PVS and securities firm SHS were among supporters of the northern bourse.
