HCMC – The Directorate for Roads of Vietnam has proposed using more than VND1.4 trillion from the State budget to develop an Intelligent traffic management center.

Vietnam has put 2,268 kilometers of expressways into operation and is planning to increase the network to 3,000 kilometers by 2025 and 5,000 kilometers by 2030. The Government also expects all expressways to be fitted with Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) by 2025, along with the rollout of smart traffic management centers and electronic toll collection (ETC) systems, the Government news portal reported.

Some ITS systems are in place, but they are fragmented and lack interconnection. Current traffic management centers operate independently with inconsistent technology, falling short of advanced tools such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things and big data, limiting their ability to forecast traffic, handle incidents and optimize infrastructure.

The Ministry of Transport, now renamed the Ministry of Construction, has directed investors to install ITS on the eastern North-South expressway projects and urged provinces to invest in ITS on transversal expressways.
