HCMC – HCMC is preparing to extend Vo Van Kiet road to neighboring Long An Province, with construction slated to begin in the first quarter of next year.

The city government expects to submit the investment proposal by mid-2025. The VND19-trillion project aims to strengthen regional connectivity and unlock development opportunities along the planned corridor.

Nguyen Van Duoc, chairman of the HCMC People’s Committee, has told relevant agencies to accelerate project preparations. The Department of Transport has been assigned to complete a pre-feasibility study for submission to the city’s People’s Council at its mid-year meeting.

Simultaneously, departments have been instructed to advance procedures related to investment approval, land compensation, site clearance, and resettlement to ensure construction can begin as scheduled.

The Department of Construction has also been tasked with coordinating land-use planning along the proposed extension. Plans will focus on developing educational facilities, healthcare centers, and exhibition complexes, which will be submitted to the city government for review.

The extension will start at the Vo Van Kiet–National Highway 1 overpass and end at the city’s border with Long An Province, coinciding with the starting point of Long An’s DT.823D road project in Duc Hoa District. It will span 14.6 kilometers and will be divided into three continuous segments.

The first section, measuring 2.7 kilometers, will stretch from the National Highway 1 overpass to the Tan Tao–Cho Dem Interchange on Vo Tran Chi Street. The second, about 6.6 kilometers long, will connect the Tan Tao–Cho Dem Interchange to Beltway 3 and will include an interchange at Beltway 3. The final segment will run 5.3 kilometers from Beltway 3 to the Long An border.

Part of the route, specifically the first section, was previously developed under a build-operate-transfer (BOT) model in 2015. However, the city government terminated the BOT contract ahead of schedule in November 2024.

The project is designed as a major urban arterial road with a planned width of 60 meters. The speed limit will be set at 80 kilometers per hour for motor vehicles and 60 kilometers per hour for mixed traffic.

City authorities expect the Vo Van Kiet road extension to alleviate traffic congestion and facilitate economic development by improving connectivity between HCMC and Long An Province.
