HCMC – The World Bank will provide loans for a VND17,759-billion (US$741 million) project to assist 10 provinces in the Mekong Delta to combat climate change.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Hoang Hiep chaired a meeting in Can Tho City on August 12 to review the progress of the MERIT-WB11 project.

Through the project, the participating provinces—Dong Thap, Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Kien Giang, Bac Lieu, Hau Giang, Soc Trang, Tra Vinh, Ca Mau and An Giang—can bolster the resilience of agricultural production and the livelihoods of local residents in the face of climate change.

The project will employ both construction and non-construction solutions to enhance the agricultural value chain, increase residents’ incomes, and promote the transformation of production models toward a centralized and modern approach.

Of the VND17,759 billion cost, VND13,092 billion (US$545 million) is sourced from WB loans and the remainder from reciprocal capital and aid.

The project received approval from the prime minister in March 2024 and is currently in the stages of information gathering and completing the pre-feasibility study. The project is expected to be submitted to the prime minister this October for further consideration.
