HCMC — The capital city of Hanoi will begin construction of the Thuong Cat Bridge across the Red River on October 10, reported the Vietnam News Agency.

The VND7.3-trillion project will be launched on the 71st anniversary of Hanoi’s Liberation Day. With connecting roads included, the project has a total length of 5.2 kilometers. Funding will come from the city’s budget.

The bridge will have eight lanes, including six for vehicles and two for non-motorized traffic. Its main span will be 35 meters wide.

Under the approved plan, the project starts at the intersection with Ky Vu Street in Thuong Cat Ward and ends at the intersection with Route 23B in Thien Loc Commune.

City authorities said the project will help ease traffic on Beltways 3 and 5, and National Highway 70.

In January last year, Hanoi City held a design competition for the bridge. The winning concept, named “Peace Bird,” features a cable-stayed structure with four main spans and pylons shaped like wings in flight.

The design draws inspiration from the Vietnamese proverb “Where there is good land, birds come to perch,” symbolizing harmony with the Red River’s ecosystem and carrying a global message of peace.
