HCMC – Feature phones will become useless in HCMC when 2G mobile networks are discontinued by September 15.
The HCMC Department of Information and Communications announced the forthcoming shutdown of 2G mobile service at a news conference on socio-economic matters in the city today, August 18.
The phase-out of 2G mobile service follows the roadmap of the Ministry of Information and Communications, which has restricted the import, production and sale of 2G-only phones since July 1, 2021.
By late 2023, the HCMC Department of Information and Communications, in coordination with the People’s Committee of Thu Duc City and district authorities, had found no stores selling feature phones.
Data from the Department of Telecommunications under the Ministry of Information and Communications showed that HCMC had had more than 14 million mobile subscribers by the first quarter of 2024. Among them, over 10.6 million use smartphones that are compatible to 3G and 4G mobile networks.
