HCMC –  The HCMC Department of Transport will begin work on a VND1.5 trillion project to widen the busy National Highway 50 in December this year.

According to the project approved by the department in April 2022, the expansion will start from Nguyen Van Linh Avenue and end near Long An Province, with a total length of 6.9 kilometers.

From Nguyen Van Linh Avenue, a 4.4-km road section will be constructed in parallel with the current National Highway 50, and for the remaining 2.5 km, the national highway will be upgraded and widened.

The investment capital will be sourced from the State budget. The project is slated for completion in 2024.

Two bridges along the road, Ba Lon and Ong Thin, will be rebuilt and widened to six lanes.

According to the Transport Department, the project will boost connectivity between HCMC and Long An and other Mekong Delta provinces, the under-construction Ben Luc-Long Thanh expressway and other major roads of HCMC.

Nguyen Vinh Ninh, deputy director of the traffic structure construction management board in HCMC, said four tender packages would be carried out in December for the construction of the 4.4-kilometer section. The remaining work would be done in 2023.

National Highway 50 is the westbound road of HCMC but traffic congestion is a daily occurrence on this road.
