HCMC – Phase one of the 220kV transmission line project connecting the mainland and Phu Quoc Island off Kien Giang Province in the Mekong Delta was put into operation yesterday, October 14.

Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC), a subsidiary of Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), said the voltage level of the transmission line was 110kV in phase one.

The overhead power transmission system starts from Kien Binh Commune, Kien Luong District, to Phu Quoc City, both in Kien Giang Province.

It has a total length of 80.4 kilometers, including 64.7 kilometers spanning over the sea. The project has reportedly been the longest sea-crossing power line in Southeast Asia.

Some 169 support towers were built, with 117 of them in the sea.

The project was planned and implemented by local engineers and workers, with construction materials being produced in Vietnam.

The construction helps address rapidly growing energy needs of Phu Quoc, easing pressure on the existing 110kV submarine power cable line, which began operation in 2014. The investor expected the project would ensure power supply on the island by 2035.

Its investment costs roughly VND2,220 billion, using EVNSPC’s budget and loans from commercial credit institutions.
