Two days after Sonca, central Vietnam braces for Storm Nesat

HCMC – After Storm Sonca made landfall on October 15,  central Vietnam is bracing for another storm, which is entering the East Sea and forecast to strike the region later this week.

Storm Nesat, the sixth to hit the country this year, is forecast to wreak havoc on the central region which has yet to recover from the aftermath of the fifth storm, Sonca.

In Quang Nam, priority is being given to mitigating the damage caused by Sonca ahead of the arrival of Nesat.

The local authorities are reviewing flood-prone areas, and creek bottoms along rivers and streams where flash floods and landslides can happen.

Fishing is currently banned.

In preparation for the upcoming natural calamity, schools, healthcare centers, electric systems, clean water and irrigation works must be repaired and consolidated immediately.

On the morning of October 16, the Danang City government had raised the measures to cope with the aftermath of Storm Sonca.

Accordingly, the Natural Resources and Environment Department is told to coordinate with relevant agencies to implement the environmental sanitation plan slated for completion today, October 17.

Le Trung Chinh, chairman of the municipal government, said that torrential rains would continue to hit the city.

Additionally, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has been tasked with collaborating with the City Police and other authorities to develop fire prevention solutions and flood rescue.

In the meantime, the two tunnels of Deo Ca have been reopened to normal traffic after the landslide, according to Deo Ca Transport Infrastructure Investment Joint Stock Company.

Besides, the Nouth-South road linking Thua Thien-Hue and Danang was cleared this morning after being closed for one day due to a landslide.

Until this morning, floodwaters still inundated many low-lying areas in Thua Thien-Hue Province such as Quang Dien and Phu Loc Districts. Besides, there were 37 landslides in Phu Loc, A Luoi and Nam Dong Districts.

According to the province, measures to cope with the aftermath have been accelerated to avoid further damage from Storm Nesat.
