CAN THO – Dong Giao Foodstuff Export JSC (DOVECO) plans to develop a fruit and vegetable processing plant in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang.
According to the provincial government, DOVECO is set to invest VND500 billion in the plant, which will cover 10 hectares of land.
Of the total area, five hectares will be used for building the processing facility, while another facility for the preliminary treatment, preservation and packaging of fresh fruits for export will be set up on another five-hectare plot of land.
The plant is expected to put out 350,000 tons of produce per year, with 150,000 tons of processed items and 200,000 tons of fresh fruits packaged for export.
Besides this, DOVECO noted it will transfer technologies to and cooperate with local farmers to monitor the production process; it will also purchase all the input materials.
DOVECO currently has 40 product lines, focusing on five main groups: fresh fruit, frozen products, canned items, juice and concentrate products.
Founded in 1955, DOVECO operates two foodstuff factories in the northern province of Ninh Binh and Gia Lai in the Central Highlands. DOVECO products have been exported to over 50 countries and territories, including highly demanding markets such as the European Union and Japan.
The firm also established a partnership to cultivate and consume farm produce in other localities across Vietnam, thus helping boost farm produce consumption, creating job opportunities and improving the incomes of farmers joining the DOVECO supply chain.
As for the Mekong Delta, fruit trees cover some 307,000 hectares of land in this region, accounting for 40% of the nation’s total area for fruit cultivation. The delta supplies some four tons of fruit to the market. In particular, Tien Giang is home to various specialty fruits such as mangoes, longan, durian and rambutan, according to data from the Cultivation Department, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
