HCMC – Long An International Port and the Port of Oakland, the fourth-largest port on the West Coast of the U.S., have clinched a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on future cooperation.

Long An authorities met with a business delegation from Oakland City, California, led by Mayor Sheng Thao, on August 8 to explore business opportunities in the province.

Nguyen Van Duoc, Long An Province’s Party Secretary, said that the Oakland delegation’s business trip underscores their confidence in the province as a secure and sustainable investment destination.

During the meeting, representatives from both sides participated in the signing ceremony of the MOU between Long An and Oakland ports. The agreement aims to foster the exchange of expertise in port management and operation, enhance market promotion to boost cargo transshipment volume between the two ports, and facilitate connections between import-export businesses to enhance trade between Long An Province and the State of California, as well as between Vietnamese and U.S. businesses.

Sheng Thao, speaking at the meeting, highlighted that the MOU signing demonstrates the spirit of cooperation between the two sides. She expressed her hope for strengthened virtual exchanges to further promote investment and trade between Long An Province and Oakland City.

The MOU signing ceremony was part of the business delegation’s agenda from the State of California, jointly organized by the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Vietnamese American Business Association (VABA).

Currently, the U.S. ranks sixth among 40 countries and territories with investments in Long An, totaling 23 projects. These projects have pledged over US$484 million, accounting for 4.6% of Long An’s foreign direct investment capital.

Long An International Port, developed by Dong Tam Group, has linked its seven berths since June, featuring a total berth length of nearly 1.7 kilometers. In its upcoming phase of development, Long An International Port will expand to nine berths, increasing its berth length to nearly 2.4 kilometers. This expansion will enable the port to accommodate vessels of up to 100,000 dead weight tonnage.
