Sand shortage seen affecting HCMC Beltway 3 progress

The Saigon Times

Must read

HCMC – The HCMC Beltway No. 3 project is facing a setback as the Mekong Delta province of An Giang has said it is unable to supply sand as required.

An Giang’s leadership on December 4 wrote to the HCMC’s People’s Committee saying that the province can no longer support the beltway construction project due to the depletion of its sand resources, which have been allocated to high-priority highway construction projects in the Mekong Delta.

This marks the second time An Giang has rejected the request to assist in supplying sand for the HCMC Beltway No. 3 project, emphasizing its commitment to prioritize local projects.

The HCMC section of Beltway No. 3 is 47 kilometers long and requires an investment of VND41 trillion. Since work began five months ago, the project has seen a sluggish pace and may fall behind schedule.

Contractors are currently mobilizing resources for ancillary works, service roads and foundations. However, only a fraction of the budget allocated for the project has been disbursed, raising concerns about its ability to meet the deadline.

An Giang’s refusal to provide sand adds uncertainty to the future of the project, with the project already experiencing a shortage of around 20% of the required sand for foundation work.

This shortage, combined with potential disruptions from other sources, poses a serious risk to the project’s overall timeline and completion.
