HCMC – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has urged relevant agencies to conduct a feasibility study on the construction of an additional international airport in the southern Red River region in northern Vietnam.
During a meeting of the Coordinating Council for the Red River Delta Region on December 7, PM Chinh said another airport would be needed in the southern part of the Red River region, as the existing airports, namely Noi Bai, Van Don, and Cat Bi, are situated in the northern part.
As part of the national airport system plan announced in July, Hanoi would have an additional airport to complement Noi Bai International Airport once it reaches a capacity of 100 million passengers annually. The plan’s objective is to establish two regional aviation transshipment centers in Hanoi and HCMC.
Hanoi is currently evaluating three potential locations for the new airport. The first option is to construct the airport in Tan Uoc Commune, Thanh Van (Thanh Oai), and Tien Phong Commune, Tan Minh (Thuong Tin), spanning an area of 1,300 hectares.
Authorities are also considering a proposal to build the airport along the northern Tay Bac-National Highway 5 expressway axis within Tan Dan and Chuyen My communes, Phu Xuyen District, and Dong Tan, Minh Duc, Trung Tu communes, Ung Hoa District.
Another potential location is in Dong Tan, Minh Duc, Tram Long, Kim Duong, Hoa Lam, Ung Hoa District.
The government’s vision is to transform the Red River Delta into a modern service hub in the Southeast Asian region.
According to the plan, Hanoi will serve as a national center for politics, administration, education, training, science, technology, economy, and international trade. Meanwhile, Haiphong and Quang Ninh will become leading centers for marine economy development in the region and globally.
