HCMC – The 13th Party Central Committee (PCC) has agreed to let Vo Van Thuong quit as a member of the Politburo and of the PCC, State President, and chairman of the National Defense and Security Council.
The decision was made by the Party Central Committee at its extraordinary session held this afternoon, March 20, to look into Thuong’s request to resign from all his positions.
According to a report by the Central Inspection Commission and relevant authorities, Thuong was found to have violated the rules on what Party members are banned from doing and on Party members’ responsibility of acting as role models for officials and party members, especially for members of the Politburo, the Secretariat, and the Party Central Committee.
Thuong’s violations have caused negative public opinion and impacted the reputation of the Party, the State, and his own. Fully aware of his responsibility before the Party and the public, he had tendered his resignation from all his official duties.
Over a year ago, on March 2, 2023, Vo Van Thuong, who was then member of the Politburo and Permanent Secretary of the Party Central Committee, was elected by the National Assembly to serve as State President for the 2021-2026 term, replacing Nguyen Xuan Phuc.
At the beginning of the 13th term in 2021, the Politburo had 18 members, but now there are 14 remaining due to four individuals resigning from their duties. The total number of Party Central Committee members (including alternate members) was 200, and it is currently 179.
