HCMC – The benchmark VN-Index of the Hochiminh Stock Exchange ended higher today, October 12, extending its winning run to seven straight sessions although the selling pressure rose sharply and decliners far outnumbered winners.

With 175 winners and 228 losers, the VN-Index added 0.71 points, or 0.05% against the previous session to 1,394.8. More than 740 million shares worth over VND22 trillion were traded on bourse, up 17% in volume and 24% in value over the session earlier.

In the VN30 basket, only eight stocks advanced, while 17 others fell but most of them dropped slightly by 1-2%. Electricity firm POW was the biggest advancer in the basket, rising 2.4%, and mobile phone retailer MWG expanded 2%.

Realty firm VIC hovered around its reference price for most of the session before surging at the close. Despite inching up 1.1% to VND92,900, VIC was the major driver of the main index’s gain.

Contrary to the significant performance of bank stocks in the previous session, only two lenders BID and VIB made gains today while most of their fellows reversed course to end lower or moved around their reference prices.

Some property and construction stocks closed on an upbeat note such as FLC, IJC, DIG, SCR, HQC, KBC, and FIT, with a matching volume ranging between 2.3 and 12.4 million shares, especially FLC seeing over 34 million shares transacted.

Lender SHB, a new member on the southern market, was the most actively traded stock on bourse, with more than 38 million shares changing hands. However, SHB shed 0.3%.

Other decliners included small and medium stocks such as ROS, DLG, HAG, and HNG but most of them fell slightly.

On the northern bourse, the HNX-Index gained 1.34 points, or 0.36% against yesterday, with 65 advancers and 76 decliners.
