HCMC – The HCMC Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Projects Management Unit has proposed an additional VND1,570 billion for the Tham Luong-Ben Cat-Nuoc Len canal rehabilitation project.

This additional funding would be used to cover new construction components and ensure the project’s infrastructure is fully integrated.

If approved, the project’s total cost would rise to VND9,770 billion. The breakdown includes VND507 billion for new construction components, VND256 billion for adjusted construction costs, and nearly VND300 billion for compensation and resettlement support.

As of early July 2024, significant progress has been made on the project. Embankment construction is 67.65% complete, concrete pile installation is 54.16% finished, and weak soil treatment is 52.83% done. Other tasks, such as installing technical trenches and drainage pipes, are less advanced, with respective completion of 13% and 17%.

The project faces challenges, particularly in land acquisition and the relocation of power and telecommunications infrastructure.

The management board has requested the city’s districts to hand over the required land by August 15 to keep the construction on schedule. They have also sought assistance from the HCMC Department of Industry and Trade and other relevant agencies for the safe and efficient relocation of power and telecommunication cables.

To enhance the project’s effectiveness, the management board has proposed additional infrastructure along the canal route. This includes building new bridges, pedestrian walkways, temporary roads, fire hydrant systems, drainage outlets, and a comprehensive waterway traffic infrastructure system.

The Tham Luong-Ben Cat-Nuoc Len canal project, which began in February 2023, spans 63 kilometers and involves dredging 31 kilometers of the canal and constructing parallel roads of the same length. The project passes through multiple districts including Binh Tan, Tan Phu, Tan Binh, Go Vap, Binh Thanh, Binh Chanh, and 12.
