HCMC – A fallen tree branch killed two people and injured three others at Tao Dan Park in downtown HCMC today morning, local media reported.
The incident occurred at around 7:00 a.m. on August 9, as several people were doing morning exercises in the park in District 1. A 10-meter-long branch broke off from a tall tree and fell from the height of 25 meters, striking five individuals, the HCMC Infrastructure Management Center (HIMC) said in a statement issued following the incident.
The statement said the outside appearance of the tree branch was normal but there was decay inside the branch.
Park security personnel and bystanders provided immediate assistance, while local police and medical teams arrived shortly after, witnesses said.
Two people died at the scene, while the three injured were taken to nearby hospitals. A 62-year-old man was admitted to People’s 115 Hospital with a skull fracture and brain injury and underwent emergency surgery.
Another victim, a 69-year-old man, suffered a spinal injury and is under observation. A 67-year-old woman sustained soft tissue injuries and is being monitored at Saigon General Hospital.
Tao Dan Park is a popular spot for exercise and leisure. The park is known for its old trees and annual spring flower exhibitions.
