HCMC – Choi Joo Ho, general director of Samsung Vietnam, has said the South Korean company will boost the use of renewable energy for its production operations.
Speaking at a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha on August 12, Choi praised the Vietnamese Government for issuing Decree 80, which facilitates the direct power purchase agreement (DPPA) mechanism between renewable energy generators and large consumers.
Samsung Vietnam hopes to have more favorable conditions to enhance renewable energy use in its production, aligning with Vietnam’s net-zero emissions goal by 2050, Choi said.
Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha emphasized Vietnam’s commitment to supporting businesses in accelerating green transformation and reducing carbon emissions. He highlighted the Government’s efforts in establishing regulations on emission limits, carbon credit markets, carbon tax policy, green finance, and land incentives.
Deputy PM Ha also called on foreign businesses, including Samsung Vietnam, to provide practical solutions and recommendations for overcoming challenges in implementing the DPPA mechanism. This effort is part of Vietnam’s broader aim to transition to a fully market-based electricity system.
He encouraged Samsung Vietnam to continue investing in research and development (R&D) centers and to promote technology transfer in emerging industries such as semiconductors.
With a total investment of US$22.8 billion, Samsung is the largest foreign direct investor in Vietnam, operating six manufacturing plants and one R&D center. From January to July this year, Samsung Vietnam exported US$33.5 billion worth of products, a 5% year-on-year increase.
