HCMC – Five Vietnamese students have been honored with Women in STEM scholarships through the two programs of ASEAN-UK SAGE and the British Council, aiming to bridge gender gaps in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.
The ASEAN-UK SAGE Programme has awarded scholarships to Lam Ngoc Ngan and Nguyen Ha Phuong Thao. The British Council’s Women in STEM scholarships have been granted to Nguyen Vu Tuong Linh, Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy, and Truong Ngoc Mai.
These scholarships are designed to enhance gender equity in STEM fields, where women are traditionally underrepresented. UK Ambassador to ASEAN, Sarah Tiffin, emphasized the significance of these scholarships, stating, “The UK is committed to advancing girls’ education across ASEAN. We are thrilled to support these new scholars and look forward to their future contributions to STEM.”
Donna McGowan, director for Vietnam at the British Council, added, “Congratulations to all the scholars. Their achievements will inspire more women and girls to pursue STEM careers and help address the under-representation of women in these fields.”
The scholarship recipients will begin their studies at top universities in the UK in September 2024. Applications for the next round of scholarships will open in January 2025.
Globally, women account for just 29.2 percent of the STEM workforce, despite making up nearly half of the broader employment sector, according to the World Economic Forum.
