HCMC – Vietnam is on track to have at least 3,000 kilometers of expressway by 2025, according to Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

Around 1,000 kilometers of expressway have been newly built in 15 provinces and centrally-run cities, taking the total to nearly 2,100 kilometers, PM Chinh said at a ceremony held on August 18 to kick off a nationwide campaign to accelerate expressway construction.

Nearly 1,700 kilometers of expressway is currently under construction across 48 provinces and centrally-run cities, he noted.

The PM urged localities and ministries to expedite construction work, particularly in land clearance, material supply, and construction, to ensure the completion of these expressway projects by the end of 2025. This push is expected to significantly boost economic and social development.

Nguyen Viet Hai, chairman of Son Hai Group, a key contractor, expressed the commitment of companies involved in the expressway projects to complete their work three to six months ahead of schedule.

For instance, the Khanh Hoa–Buon Ma Thuot Expressway is now expected to be finished by December 31, 2025, rather than in 2026, according to Hai. He also said that Son Hai Group plans to complete 52 kilometers of the Bien Hoa–Vung Tau Expressway by the end of 2025.

Chinh has directed the Ministry of Transport to closely monitor progress and ensure that the projects remain on schedule. He also instructed the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Planning and Investment to allocate the necessary funding promptly, while the State Bank of Vietnam has been asked to facilitate financing for public-private partnership projects.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is responsible for securing construction materials, and the Ministry of Construction must ensure compliance with building standards and timely project approvals.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Commission for the Management of State Capital at Enterprises are tasked with relocating technical infrastructure, such as high-voltage power lines and underground cables, within project areas.
