Russia backs Vietnam’s nuclear energy development

HCMC – Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin indicated Russia’s readiness to assist Vietnam in developing its nuclear energy industry during a meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Hanoi on January 14.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties across trade, energy, science, and technology. Mishustin emphasized Russia’s extensive expertise in nuclear power projects and proposed collaboration to establish Vietnam’s nuclear energy capabilities.

Discussions included plans to build a nuclear science and technology research center in Vietnam. Both sides highlighted the vital role of science and technology in advancing their comprehensive partnership.

The prime ministers agreed to bolster economic cooperation by leveraging free trade agreements between Vietnam and the Eurasian Economic Union. They also explored measures to improve market access for agricultural products and pharmaceuticals.

Education emerged as a key area of collaboration, with Russia pledging to increase scholarships for Vietnamese students and support joint academic initiatives. The two nations also discussed enhancing language education by promoting Vietnamese in Russia and Russian in Vietnam.

Tourism and transportation links featured prominently, with the resumption of direct flights and charter services facilitating visitor exchanges. The leaders also discussed improving connectivity in maritime, rail, and urban transportation.

Mishustin’s visit, the first by a foreign leader in 2025, marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Russia. The two countries signed agreements spanning science, information, and cultural exchange.
