Coffee prices surge

By Gia Nghi

Must read

HCMC – Arabica coffee prices surged by 5.85% to a new high of US$$7,662 per ton between January 20 and 26, while Robusta beans climbed by nearly 10.8% to US$$5,544 per ton.

According to the Mercantile Exchange of Vietnam (MXV), the raw materials market showed notable differentiation during the last week, with the industrial raw materials sector closing the week on a strong note, particularly coffee.

Specifically, Arabica coffee prices rose by 5.85% to a new high of US$7,662 per ton, while Robusta coffee jumped nearly 10.8% to US$5,544 per ton, just US$21 below last year’s record high of US$5,565 per ton.

After just five consecutive trading sessions since Donald Trump took office as U.S. President, Robusta coffee prices have risen by nearly US$400 per ton.

MXV said concerns over global supply shortages, along with a weaker U.S. dollar, have boosted buying, sending coffee prices higher last week.

The forecast of ongoing coffee supply shortages in Brazil for the fifth consecutive year, as reported by investment bank Itau BBA, has heightened concerns over global supply and fueled the sharp rise in coffee prices.

In addition, the bank forecast that global coffee prices would remain high in the coming period, while supply is expected to be scarce from 2025 to early 2026.

The bank projected global coffee prices would remain high in the near term, with supply expected to be tight from 2025 to early 2026.

In Vietnam, the world’s largest Robusta coffee producer, the nine-day Lunar New Year holiday has led to a “freeze” in the local coffee market, with a disruption in trading activity due to the suspension of transactions by local people and businesses.
