Can Tho — A long-delayed embankment project along the Can Tho River is slated for completion by December 2026 after nearly a decade of setbacks due to land clearance issues, reported the local media.
Launched in 2016 to address flooding and erosion in Can Tho’s urban core, the 5.16-km project carries a budget of nearly VND1.1 trillion. Funding is provided through official development assistance loans, non-repayable aid from the French Development Agency, and local budgets. Two of the four construction packages are complete, but 11 unresolved land disputes spanning 336 meters have stalled the remaining sections.
The project missed its original December 2023 deadline, leaving some funds undisbursed. To move forward, the city’s Project Management Board proposed using local funds to replace expired foreign aid. The plan, approved by city authorities and the French agency, adjusts the timeline to resolve land issues between July 2025 and April 2026. Construction will then resume to meet the new deadline.
