HCMC – HCMC has selected Con Dao and Can Gio as the first localities to roll out green transportation initiatives as part of its broader plan to reduce vehicle emissions and promote sustainable development.
At a recent meeting with the Con Dao Special Zone People’s Committee, HCMC Chairman Nguyen Van Duoc urged officials to develop a comprehensive strategy to turn Con Dao into a “green – unique – livable” destination. He emphasized the need to preserve the island’s distinctive heritage while balancing economic growth with environmental and historical conservation, the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.
Duoc added that to realize sustainable development goals, Con Dao and Can Gio need to build a modern and environmentally friendly transportation infrastructure. Transitioning newly registered gasoline-powered vehicles to clean-energy vehicles is essential, he said, while investors should be encouraged to adopt electric and renewable-energy-powered transportation.
The green transport plan will be implemented in two phases. The first phase focuses on building a network of charging stations and transitioning the city’s bus fleet to electric or renewable energy by 2030. The second phase will expand the program citywide, with measures such as buyback policies for old vehicles and financial incentives for individuals and businesses switching from gasoline to electric or clean-energy vehicles.
The HCMC Department of Construction is finalizing the proposal, which will be submitted to the municipal People’s Council in the fourth quarter of this year.
This initiative is part of HCMC’s broader vehicle emission control plan. Earlier, the city announced plans to replace more than 400,000 gasoline-powered vehicles used by ride-hailing drivers and delivery services with electric vehicles.
