HCMC – Vietnam National Industry-Energy Group (Petrovietnam) has announced that it will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the O Mon IV thermal power plant in Can Tho City on August 19.

The project at the O Mon Power Center requires over VND29.9 trillion, equivalent to US$1.3 billion. It is one of 80 projects which will be either launched or inaugurated to mark the 80th anniversary of National Day (September 2).

The O Mon IV thermal power plant is a key project in the Block B – O Mon gas-to-power chain, applying next-generation combined-cycle gas turbine technology with a designed capacity of 1,155 MW.

The chain’s implementation has faced numerous challenges, delaying the overall timeline by nearly 20 years.

The project is invested by Petrovietnam. A consortium comprising Doosan Enerbility Co., Ltd. (South Korea) and Power Engineering Consulting JSC 2 (PECC2) is the construction contractor.

The plant is slated to begin commercial operation in December 2028, synchronized with the timeline for bringing Block B gas onshore.

Once operational, O Mon IV will raise the total power capacity managed and operated by Petrovietnam to over 9,300 MW, accounting for about 10% of the national power system.

The plant will supply clean electricity to the Mekong Delta while contributing to national energy security.
