HCMC – Vietnamese Party General Secretary To Lam this morning, October 9, arrived in Pyongyang for a state visit to North Korea at the invitation of General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) and President of the State Affairs of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Un.
The visit, taking place from October 9 to 11, coincides with the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
This is To Lam’s first visit to North Korea since taking office and the first trip by a Vietnamese party leader to the country in 18 years. The visit also marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and North Korea.
To Lam is accompanied by a high-level delegation including seven Politburo members and several senior government officials, among them Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung, and Minister of National Defence Phan Van Giang.
Nguyen Minh Vu, permanent deputy minister of Foreign Affairs, said the visit reaffirms Vietnam’s consistent foreign policy of maintaining ties with traditional partners.
He said the trip provides an opportunity for the top leaders of both countries to discuss strategic directions to strengthen bilateral relations, particularly in healthcare, culture, sports, agriculture, and people-to-people exchanges.
Vu added that Vietnam supports efforts promoting peace, stability, and development on the Korean Peninsula and globally.
Vietnam and North Korea established diplomatic relations in 1950. The two countries have signed multiple cooperation agreements in areas such as culture, healthcare, civil aviation, judicial assistance, investment protection, and double taxation avoidance.
