HCMC – HCMC has proposed building a metro line linking Tan Son Nhat International Airport and Long Thanh International Airport to improve urban connectivity and ease travel between the two major air transport hubs.

The southern megacity has submitted a plan to the central Government proposing four possible routes that use existing and planned metro lines. All options involve the Thu Thiem–Long Thanh national railway, but the city said the combination of Metro Line No. 2 (Tham Luong-Ben Thanh-Thu Thiem) and the Thu Thiem–Long Thanh line is the most feasible and can be implemented soon.

The Ben Thanh–Tham Luong section of Metro Line No. 2, about 12 kilometers long, is close to completing site clearance. Construction is expected to begin later this year and finish before 2032. Passengers from Tan Son Nhat Airport could board the metro at Ba Queo Station to reach downtown HCMC.

The six-kilometer Ben Thanh–Thu Thiem section, designed to run underground, can be built more quickly due to fewer land clearance requirements. The Thu Thiem–Long Thanh line would follow the HCMC–Long Thanh–Dau Giay Expressway and Beltway No. 3, mostly through vacant land, and continue along Provincial Road 25B in Dong Nai Province.

The city said the proposed route would connect directly to Ben Thanh Station, which serves as a hub for metro lines 1, 2, 3, and 4.

HCMC has requested to lead the project in coordination with Dong Nai Province to adjust planning and determine project management responsibilities. Once planning procedures are completed, the city will seek approval to include the Thu Thiem–Long Thanh line under the special policy framework of Resolution 188/2025/QH15.

The 15th National Assembly adopted Resolution 188/2025/QH15 on February 19, 2025 at its 9th extraordinary session, granting Hanoi City and HCMC special policies and mechanisms to develop their urban railway networks.
