HCMC — Vietnam and Malaysia have agreed to set up an information-sharing mechanism to strengthen fisheries management and handle violations involving fishing vessels, the Vietnam News Agency reported.
The mechanism will link the Department of Fisheries under Malaysia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security with the Directorate of Fisheries under Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, along with the Vietnamese Embassy in Malaysia.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Phung Duc Tien led a Vietnamese delegation to a meeting with Malaysian officials in Putrajaya (Malaysia) to enhance cooperation in agriculture and promote sustainable fisheries development.
The move is part of Vietnam’s efforts to implement its plan against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and support the Government’s campaign for sustainable fisheries.
Both sides agreed to form a joint working group to review and update the 2014 memorandum of understanding on agricultural cooperation, focusing on sustainable fisheries and IUU prevention.
They also discussed measures to facilitate trade in agricultural, forestry, and fishery products, support Vietnamese seafood businesses investing in Malaysia, and promote green and circular agriculture in the region.
