HCMC – The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) has asked the Ministry of Construction for approval to carry out the second phase of Long Thanh International Airport project.

Phase two is planned to include a passenger terminal and supporting infrastructure, increasing capacity to 50 million passengers and 1.5 million tons of cargo per year. Total investment is estimated at VND80 trillion, using ACV’s own funds, reported the Vietnam News Agency.

ACV proposed a two-step approach. First, the construction of a third runway and related facilities, with an estimated cost of VND13 trillion, covering the runway, taxiways, airfield equipment, signage, markings, and technical infrastructure. Once approved, the results would be incorporated into the full feasibility study for phase two.

Funding for the runway could come from after-tax profits in 2024–2025, while the remaining phase-two projects would be financed from equity and loans. ACV said that continuing as the investor would maintain consistency, as it currently manages phase-one infrastructure and operations.

The Ministry of Construction has also proposed that the Government be allowed to approve the phase-two feasibility study directly, without National Assembly review. The ministry said rapid GDP growth from 2026 could push demand at Long Thanh above earlier forecasts, calling for earlier investment preparation than the 2028–2032 schedule.
