HCMC – The Vietnamese Government has approved a four-day New Year holiday for public employees in 2026, running from January 1 to January 4, with one working day rescheduled to the following week.

In an official document issued by the Government Office, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra endorsed a proposal by the Ministry of Home Affairs to extend the 2026 New Year break. Under the plan, civil servants and public employees will be off from Thursday, January 1, through Sunday, January 4, 2026.

The working day on Friday, January 2, will be swapped with Saturday, January 10, allowing for four consecutive days off.

For private-sector workers, the Government encouraged employers to apply a similar holiday schedule, provided legal entitlements are fully ensured and any arrangements more favorable to employees are prioritized.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has been tasked with notifying government agencies, public service units, political and socio-political organizations, businesses and workers of the approved schedule.

Agencies and organizations are required to arrange duty rosters and work plans to ensure uninterrupted operations and continued public services during the holiday period.

Ministries, sectors and local authorities were also instructed to prepare appropriate measures to maintain production and business activities, balance supply and demand, and stabilize prices and markets before, during and after the holiday.

Earlier, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced the 2026 public holiday calendar. Under the plan, the Lunar New Year (Tet) will include five statutory days off—one day before and four days after the holiday. Combined with weekly days off, the Tet holiday will last nine consecutive days.
