HCMC – Dong Thap Province plans to build an overpass at the Dong Tam junction to ease traffic congestion at the starting point of the Rach Mieu 2 bridge project.
Phan Vinh Thanh, deputy director of the Dong Thap Department of Construction, told a January 23 press briefing that congestion emerged after Rach Mieu 2 opened to traffic on August 19, 2025, as vehicles shifted in large numbers to the new route.
Authorities have coordinated with traffic police to divert vehicles to Rach Mieu 1 bridge and adjusted traffic signals at the Dong Tam junction, but congestion has not been fully resolved.
Thanh said building an overpass at the junction is considered the long-term solution.
The preliminary investment for the overpass is estimated at about VND248 billion. Dong Thap is working with the My Thuan Project Management Board under the Ministry of Construction to implement the project.
He added that about VND400 billion remained after completion of the Rach Mieu 2 project. Dong Thap and Vinh Long provinces have proposed using part of this amount to build grade-separated interchanges at Dong Tam and at the endpoint on National Highway 60 in Vinh Long, about 0.71 km north of Ham Luong Bridge.
Construction of the Dong Tam overpass is expected to start this year and be completed in 2027.
Before Rach Mieu 2 opened, traffic between Dong Thap and Vinh Long mainly used Rach Mieu 1 bridge, which was frequently overloaded.
A report from the Department for Roads of Vietnam showed monthly traffic on Rach Mieu 1 fell from around 700,000 vehicles before Rach Mieu 2 opened to about 250,000 vehicles after the new bridge came into operation.
