HCMC – More than 95% of Vietnam’s population is expected to live within 100 km of an airport by 2030, exceeding the global average and approaching accessibility levels seen in several developed Asian economies, according to the airport development plan.
Vietnam plans to operate 30 airports during the 2021-2030 period, including 14 international airports and 16 domestic airports, Deputy Minister of Construction Le Anh Tuan said in a report submitted to the Government.
The number is projected to increase to 33 airports by 2050, comprising 14 international airports and 19 domestic airports.
The ministry said 12 additional airport locations are being studied for possible inclusion in the national airport network.
Local authorities have been instructed to prepare development proposals and mobilize private investment through public private partnership models before submitting plans for government approval.
Under the plan, Vietnam’s airport network would be comparable in scale with regional peers. Thailand currently has 39 airports, Malaysia 38, Myanmar 32, Japan 97 and South Korea 15.
The Ministry of Construction said that by 2030, more than 95% of Vietnam’s population will be able to access an airport within a 100-km radius, higher than the global average of around 75% and comparable to regional countries such as Japan at 99%, South Korea at 100%, Malaysia at 98.13%, Philippines at 93.62% and Thailand at 88%.
