HCMC – The Ministry of Health this evening, January 3 confirmed 15,936 fresh Covid cases, with 20 of them imported and 15,916 locally infected in 60 cities and provinces, down 998 cases over yesterday.
Among the domestic infections, Hanoi City recorded the highest number at 2,100, marking the second straight day that the city’s daily Covid case number exceeded 2,000.
Tay Ninh Province came second with 919 infections, followed by Vinh Long with 842, Ca Mau with 821, Khanh Hoa with 786, HCMC with 662 and Binh Phuoc with 619.
Binh Dinh, Tra Vinh, Bac Ninh, Bac Lieu and Thua Thien Hue detected 320-550 cases each, while other localities found fewer than 300 infections each.
Since the ongoing fourth wave of the Covid pandemic, Vietnam has confirmed over 1.77 million locally-infected cases, with nearly 1.4 million Covid patients having recovered from the disease.
Up to date, the country has reported 24 Omicron-hit cases that were being quarantined in Hanoi, Quang Nam, HCMC, Hai Duong, Haiphong and Thanh Hoa after their entry into Vietnam.
The ministry today reported 190 Covid fatalities, raising the country’s Covid death toll to 33,021. Among the latest deaths, 31 were reported in HCMC, 19 in An Giang, 14 in Dong Thap, 13 each in Vinh Long and Can Tho, 12 in Tay Ninh, 11 in Binh Duong and 10 in Ben Tre. The remainder was reported in 15 other cities and provinces.
In related news, Binh Phuoc Province today upgraded its Covid transmission risk level from moderate to high.
Bu Dop District in the province is at moderate risk, while 10 other districts and towns are at high risk of Covid transmission.
Due to the complicated development of Covid, the provincial government asked grassroots authorities to adopt effective anti-Covid measures to prevent the spread of the pandemic.
In another development, 10 districts in Hanoi City have suspended in-person classes due to fears over Covid spread, the local media reported.
Apart from seven districts closing schools last week, Thanh Xuan, Gia Lam and Thanh Tri districts have decided to halt in-person classes, starting from tomorrow, January 4 as these districts are at high risk of Covid transmission.
The Hanoi Department of Education and Training today issued a dispatch, asking schools in high-risk areas to allow 9th and 12th graders to swich to online study. If the risk level of the areas changes into moderate, students can return to school.
