HCMC – The Ministry of Industry and Trade has asked the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) and the Dong Bac Corporation to provide coal for coal-fired thermal power plants as committed in their signed contracts.
The two firms must ensure their coal production capacities and take all the possible measures to ensure adequate coal for coal-fired thermal power plants, especially the BOT ones, so that Vietnam does not have to compensate for the suspension of these plants, the local media reported.
The ministry stressed that the insufficient supply of coal for thermal power plants would not be accepted in any case.
The ministry also asked the Vietnam Electricity Group to direct the National Load Dispatch Center to announce the monthly electricity mobilization plans to investors of coal-fired thermal power plants so that they can ensure the coal volume for electricity generation.
Earlier, some investors of thermal power plants complained to the Ministry of Industry and Trade that Vinacomin and Dong Bac Corporation failed to provide enough coal in the first two months of the year as stated in the signed contracts.
The two firms supplied only 69.24% of the committed volume.
The Vinh Tan 1 BOT coal-fired thermal power plant in Binh Thuan Province, in particular, was not provided enough coal as stated in the contract signed in late 2013.
Vinacomin attributed the insufficient supply of coal to the Covid-19 pandemic, which led to the shortage of workers at coal mines. Moreover, the Russia-Ukraine conflict has also affected the global energy market.
