HCMC – The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) has proposed a VND745-billion plan to upgrade and repair Vinh International Airport, including its runway and taxiway.

The investment will be sourced from the aviation infrastructure maintenance fund.

Under ACV’s proposal, the airport will be closed for renovation after the 2025 Lunar New Year, with work lasting until the beginning of the peak summer holiday in April next year.

Following a renovation in the 1993-2000 period, Vinh airport inaugurated the runway which was 2,174 meters long and 30 meters wide.

From 2001 to 2003, the runway was expanded to 2,400 meters in length and 45 meters in width. However, since 2017, the runway and taxiway have not undergone any upgrades or renovations.

The runway and taxiway have deteriorated, affecting operational safety. On July 3, 2023, when a plane was preparing to take off at Vinh airport, the captain discovered some asphalt concrete patches at the end of the runway had come loose, covering an area of 41.6 square meters. The incident led to the temporary closure of the airport and resulted in the cancellation of 21 flights.
