HCMC – The Asian Development Bank (ADB) today, September 27, approved a US$2 million grant to support Vietnam in its emergency relief and humanitarian efforts following typhoon Yagi.

Shantanu Chakraborty, ADB’s country director for Vietnam, praised Vietnam’s swift response to the disaster.

“We appreciate the extraordinary efforts of the Vietnamese Government and people in dealing with the damage caused by typhoon Yagi,” he said. “This aid will support the Government’s broader relief efforts to provide immediate humanitarian assistance.”

In addition to emergency aid, ADB plans to collaborate with the Government on rebuilding affected areas and strengthening resilience against future disasters.

The funding comes from ADB’s Asia-Pacific Disaster Response Fund, which aids member countries in dealing with major natural disasters. ADB is also coordinating with other development partners to assess the needs of the northern provinces impacted by the storm.

Yagi, which struck northern Vietnam on September 7, caused extensive damage across 26 provinces, affecting nearly 37 million people. Initial economic losses are estimated at US$2.6 billion.
