HCMC – The French Development Agency (AFD) has signed an agreement with the Ministry of Finance to lend 19 million euros to the construction of a sea dike and coastal erosion protection embankment in the country’s southernmost province of Ca Mau.
On September 6, Phan Hoang Vu, director of Ca Mau Province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that preparations are underway to begin constructing sea dikes and embankments in vulnerable areas next year.
Vu emphasized the importance of the project, noting that it will help Ca Mau address the alarming rate of coastal erosion.
The project requires a total of 32 million euros, with 3.76 million euros in non-refundable aid coming from the European Union, 19 million euros from AFD, and about nine million euros in reciprocal capital from Ca Mau Province.
The project will include the construction of 19 kilometers of sea dike along a coastal road connecting Cai Doi Vam town and Nam canal.
Additionally, 11 kilometers of wavebreakers will be built in erosion-prone areas, 2,000 hectares of mangrove forests will be restored, and support will be provided for livelihood transitions in five coastal communes in Phu Tan and Tran Van Thoi districts.
Currently, over 100 kilometers of Ca Mau’s 254-kilometer coastline are affected by erosion. Over the past decade, erosion has led to the loss of about 5,250 hectares of land and protective forests.
