HCMC – Danang City will break ground on the Lien Chieu container port project worth more than US$1.7 billion on April 25.

The groundbreaking ceremony will be held by the city in coordination with a consortium of investors comprising Hateco Group JSC, Hateco Seaport Company, and APM Terminals B.V. of the Netherlands, the People’s Committee of Danang City said on April 22.

The consortium was approved as the project developer in mid-March 2026.

The port is planned as a container terminal and an international transshipment hub for the central region, designed to meet green port standards.

The project spans about 172.6 hectares. Its total design capacity is 5.7 million TEUs per year, equivalent to 74 million tons of cargo.

By 2030, annual throughput is projected at between 14.25 million and 36.3 million tons.

The terminal will have eight container berths with a total length of around 2,750 meters, capable of handling vessels of up to 18,000 TEUs. A barge terminal will serve vessels of up to 5,000 tons to support inland waterway transport and reduce road congestion.

The logistics area will be developed with warehouses, service facilities, and repair yards. A 1.5-kilometer rail link will connect the port directly to Kim Lien station to support multimodal transport.

The project is scheduled for implementation over 10 years from 2026 to 2036, divided into three phases. Three years after the first phase becomes operational, container throughput is expected to reach around four million TEUs per year.

The city has completed shared infrastructure and opened a coastal road connecting directly to the port, providing a foundation for construction and investment.
