HCMC – The HCMC Department of Transport has proposed a plan to use high-speed boats to shuttle passengers between HCMC and the future Long Thanh International Airport in neighboring Dong Nai Province.
The first phase of the airport is expected to be completed by 2026. Meanwhile, the existing four-lane expressway connecting HCMC and Long Thanh is often heavily congested but when it is widened to accommodate more traffic is unknown.
Therefore, the department recently conducted a survey exploring different options for passenger transportation between the city and the airport.
The first option is to transport passengers from Bach Dang Wharf to SwanBay Marina using express boats.
In the second option, the department proposed ferrying passengers and cars along the river from Binh Khanh in HCMC’s Nha Be District to Nhon Trach in Dong Nai. This option includes the construction of a ferry terminal in Nhon Trach, Dong Nai, along with 500 meters of road leading to the terminal.
The third option is to increase the capacity of the operational Cat Lai ferry terminal, which will be convenient for residents due to the availability of the existing traffic infrastructure.
Long Thanh International Airport, currently under construction in Long Thanh District, Dong Nai Province, is about 50 kilometers from HCMC. The first phase of the project includes constructing a runway, a passenger terminal, and supporting facilities with a capacity of 25 million passengers per year.
