HCMC – Capital disbursement for the Western Beltway project in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho has reached only 18.5% of the 2024 target set for the project, according to data from the city’s Department of Planning and Investment.
The project, which has VND310 billion allocated for this year, had spent only VND57.4 billion as of October 22. The slow use of money was highlighted during a public investment review meeting held by the Can Tho People’s Committee on October 28.
The Can Tho Department of Transport attributed the delay to extended foundation testing for bridge components, which began in July. Officials indicated that testing must be completed before moving on to subsequent stages. To mitigate delays, the department has approved a phased approach, allowing completed segments to advance incrementally.
The project also encountered issues securing suitable sand. Although additional supplies were sourced, quality issues led to the rejection of materials that failed inspections. Site clearance obstacles have further complicated the timeline.
With construction started in November 2022, the VND3.8-trillion Western Beltway project is scheduled for completion by 2026.
The project connects several districts, beginning at National Highway 91 in O Mon District and ending at National Highway 61C.
