Vietnam has set an ambitious target to turn out 50,000 engineers for the semiconductor industry by 2030. However, human resource development for this sector at universities is fraught with challenges. Complicating matters further is the scarcity of job opportunities, exacerbated by intense competition in attracting foreign investment. In late 2023, the Government tasked the Ministry of Planning and Investment with drafting and presenting a development plan for human resources in the semiconductor industry up to 2030, with a vision to 2045. At the recent “Developing Human Resources for the Semiconductor Industry” conference jointly organized by the Government Office and the Ministry of Planning and Investment, Minister Nguyen Chi Dung highlighted the rapid growth and significant global impact of the semiconductor sector over the past two decades. From 2001 to 2021, the industry expanded by 14% annually, generating nearly US$600 billion in revenue by 2023, with projections reaching US$1 trillion by 2030. This growth trajectory anticipates a demand for over one million skilled workers in chip design, production, assembly, packaging, and testing by 2030.
